Why buy special newborn cloth diapers?
Not all babies are born equal! While some may weigh around 4 kilograms, others will be much smaller, with very, very tiny thighs! We promise! Most one-size diapers are used from 3.5 or even 4 kilograms. If baby is born weighing less, they'll swim in them and... hello leaks!
Newborn cloth diapers therefore offer a size adapted to infants. Don't worry, you'll be able to use them for a while, as most newborn diapers are height-adjustable with snaps. They are simply the same as one-size cloth diapers, but in miniature! ;)
Which cloth diaper for my newborn baby?
Several solutions are available for your baby's eco-friendly diaper changes from birth. For the first few days, we recommend prefolds or tie-on diapers, which allow for a perfect fit to your child's body and are quick to change. Prefolds are an inexpensive solution and dry very quickly, allowing you to buy several and rotate them easily. They are used with waterproof diaper covers.
For nights or first outings, to avoid unnecessarily handling baby outdoors or at least, outside your comfort zone, classic Popolini or Petit Lulu diapers are perfect. Highly absorbent, they are also used with diaper covers or shorties. Due to their absorbency, these diapers take some time to dry. Prefer them if you have a dryer or in summer.
How many cloth diapers do I need for a newborn?
The number of cloth diapers you need really depends on how much you want to spend and how often you want to wash your diapers.
You generally need to change a baby's diaper 9 to 12 times, sometimes even more.
So, if you want to wash them every two days, you'll need a minimum of 24 newborn cloth diapers. But even in that case, remember to have a small pack of disposable diapers as a backup, just in case.
How to use newborn cloth diapers with the umbilical cord?
If your baby is very small and their newborn cloth diaper rubs against their umbilical cord stump, it's best to wait until the cord has fallen off and completely healed before using your cloth diapers.
However, several cloth diaper brands have newborn diapers with an umbilical cord snap to prevent rubbing and irritation during the healing process. Other brands have a large cutout at the front to allow for the umbilical cord ;)
