Can merino wool help fight eczema?

La laine mérinos peut-elle aider à lutter contre l'eczéma ?

Eczema affects many babies, and parents have been led to believe that wool can be an irritant to their child's sensitive skin.

Indeed, experts have previously stated that wool should be avoided for sensitive skin, especially if you suffer from eczema.

What causes skin irritation?

Skin irritation in babies can be caused by several factors such as:

  • Diaper dermatitis: This is caused by prolonged exposure to moisture, urine, and feces, as well as friction from the diaper. Irritants in baby products (wipes, soaps, creams) can also contribute.
  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis): A chronic condition characterized by dry, red, itchy skin. It can be triggered by allergens, irritants, or even climate changes.
  • Allergic reactions: Babies can react to skin care products, laundry detergents, fabrics, or even foods.
  • Heat: A baby who is too hot can also have irritated skin.

A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology was the first study of its kind to examine the effects of superfine merino wool on infant eczema. The objective was to improve outcomes for babies, children, and families of children with mild to moderate symptoms.

The results showed that fine merino wool can actually reduce eczema symptoms instead of exacerbating them.

Researchers found that when children switched to merino wool after wearing cotton, they showed a significant decrease in eczema severity, whereas eczema worsened when those wearing merino wool switched to cotton.

Merino wool appears to maintain the delicate skin's moisture levels at appropriate levels, preventing it from becoming too dry and thus reducing the risk of bacterial infection and the urge to scratch for itch relief.
