Winter baby: essentials to protect them from the cold

New parents often wonder how to dress their baby in winter. Ensuring your baby's comfort can be particularly concerning in colder climates and harsh winter weather.
Newborns are still developing their ability to regulate their internal temperature, so it's especially important to ensure they are kept warm, but not too warm.
So, what should you have on hand for your newborn when temperatures start to drop?
Undergarments
Layering is key to winter dressing. It is essential to fill your baby's wardrobe with soft, breathable layered clothing, preferably made from natural materials such as merino wool, wool & silk, or organic cotton.
Dressing your child in layers allows you to adapt to their needs, especially when moving from the cold outdoors to the warm indoors.
For the first layer in cold weather, choose merino silk or merino wool clothing, as placing cotton garments under a merino wool jumpsuit can hinder merino wool's ability to regulate body temperature and wick moisture away from the skin.
Undergarments (bodysuits, leggings) should be thin or comfortable. We recommend the CosiLana range: extremely soft products made from pure wool or wool & silk.
Clothing
Since babies cannot yet regulate their body temperature in the first few months, the thermoregulatory properties of merino wool are particularly useful. Overheating can be dangerous for babies, so avoid over-dressing them.
If your baby's neck is sweaty, it means they are too warm. The general rule is to dress your baby in one more layer than adults.
- We recommend clothing from Disana & Manymonths made from untreated pure wool.
- For socks, the Hirsch Natur range is the best for your little one.
For Outdoors
Here too, we advise opting for wool to provide perfect natural protection from the cold.
The Disana range offers boiled wool jumpsuits & coats: thicker and denser than knitted merino wool, it is also naturally waterproof and wind-resistant.
Our favorite? The Disana boiled wool jumpsuit, specially adapted for toddlers.
Don't forget to cover toddlers' heads and little hands with suitable mittens & hats made of pure merino wool.
For little feet: what could be better than sheepskin boots lined with pure virgin wool! That's what Fellhof offers to keep newborns' feet warm.
Some babies may need more or fewer layers to stay comfortable, depending on their size, age, and activity level.
Always monitor your baby's comfort and adjust clothing accordingly. Experiment and find the best options for your baby :-)
